Papyrus Painting:   Queen Nefertari  offering oils to Isis in the Afterlife

Papyrus Painting: Queen Nefertari offering oils to Hathor in the Afterlife

Queen Nefertari  is without a doubt the highest ranking royal lady in Egypt during the first 20 years of the reign of Ramesses II, and his most beloved wife.  She is believed to have died sometime during the Regnal Year 25 of Ramesses' reign.

Pictured here in a transparent dress - indicating she is in the afterlife she offers oils to the goddess Isis.  Isis is a very complex goddess who evolved to become a goddess of Joy, and so she was deeply loved by the general population, and truly revered by women, who aspired to embody her multifaceted role as wife, mother, and lover.. hold the key of  life or ankh in her right hand.  It was said that, with her motherly character, she greeted the souls of the dead in Duat, and proffered them with refreshments of food and drink. She also was described sometimes as mistress of the necropolis.  It is in this role where we see Isis merge with the goddess Hathor.
